Leave No Trace Hammock Camping: How to Protect Trees and Bark
Hammock camping offers an unparalleled way to connect with the great outdoors. Drifting to sleep suspended above the forest floor, gently swaying with the breeze, and waking up to an unobstructed view of the tree canopy is an experience that ground tents simply cannot match. However, as the popularity of hammock camping skyrockets, so does the visible impact on our forests. Land managers and park rangers across the globe are increasingly discovering trees with deep, permanent scars gouged into their trunks, leading to the outright banning of hammocks in many state and national parks. As outdoor enthusiasts, it is our fundamental responsibility to protect the wild spaces we love. Mastering the principles of Leave No Trace, specifically regarding how we interact with the trees that support us, is not just about following the rules; it is about ensuring that the forest remains healthy and accessible for generations of hammock campers to come.
To understand why improper hammock hanging is so destructive, you first have to understand the biological anatomy of a tree. A tree is not just a solid block of dead wood. The outermost layer of bark acts as the tree’s armor, protecting it from insects, disease, and extreme weather. Directly beneath that armor lies a highly vulnerable, microscopic layer called the cambium, alongside the phloem and xylem. These razor-thin layers are the vascular system of the tree, responsible for transporting water and vital nutrients from the roots all the way up to the highest leaves. When you hang a hammock using thin cords or abrasive ropes, the immense pressure of your body weight acts like a wire saw. It crushes the bark, severs the cambium layer, and permanently cuts off the tree’s food supply. If this damage wraps entirely around the trunk, a process known as girdling, the tree will slowly and inevitably die.
The absolute most critical rule of Leave No Trace hammock camping is that you must never, under any circumstances, use bare rope, paracord, or wire to attach your hammock to a tree. The only acceptable suspension method is utilizing specialized tree saver straps, commonly referred to as tree huggers. Tree straps are made of heavy-duty, flat nylon or polyester webbing. The flat design drastically increases the surface area of the suspension system, distributing your body weight and the sheer tension of the hammock over a much wider section of the bark. The outdoor industry standard dictates that tree straps must be an absolute minimum of one inch wide, though many park systems and conservation groups strongly recommend using straps that are one and a half to two inches wide for maximum protection. By wrapping these wide, flat straps around the trunk, you completely eliminate the cutting friction that destroys the cambium layer.
Even with the correct, wide straps, you cannot simply attach your hammock to the first two trees you see. Tree selection is a vital component of sustainable camping. You must only choose robust, mature, and perfectly healthy trees to support your weight. A good rule of thumb is to select trees that are at least six to eight inches in diameter, roughly the thickness of an adult human thigh, though larger is always better. Avoid trees with soft, easily damaged bark, such as certain species of pine or birch, and never hang from a fragile sapling that could easily be bent or uprooted by your weight. Furthermore, you must always look up and meticulously inspect the canopy for widowmakers. These are dead, hanging branches that could easily dislodge and fall on you during the night. A tree that contains widowmakers is often dead or dying, making its trunk structurally compromised and unsafe to hang from.
Leave No Trace hammock camping extends beyond just the tree trunk; it also applies to the ground directly beneath you. One of the greatest advantages of a hammock is that you do not need to find a perfectly flat, cleared patch of dirt to set up a tent. However, this advantage can quickly become an ecological hazard if you are not careful. When you set up your hammock, you will inevitably spend a significant amount of time walking, standing, and cooking directly under it. If you hang your hammock over a patch of delicate wildflowers, sensitive alpine tundra, or fragile moss, your foot traffic will trample and destroy that micro-ecosystem within a matter of hours. Always aim to set up your hammock over highly durable surfaces, such as bare dirt, rock, deep pine needles, or dry grass. If you are camping in an established backcountry site, try to hang your hammock within the designated footprint of the site to avoid expanding the area of human impact.
Finally, a crucial aspect of protecting the environment is respecting the wildlife and the natural aesthetic of the woods. When you pack up your campsite in the morning, do a thorough sweep of the area. Ensure you have not left any trash, food scraps, or gear behind. More importantly, never leave your hammock straps tied to the trees when you leave, even if you plan on returning to the exact same spot the next weekend. Leftover straps become an unnatural eyesore for other hikers, can entangle curious wildlife, and if left for months, will eventually girdle the tree as it naturally tries to grow and expand. Leave No Trace is about rendering your presence completely invisible the moment you walk away. By investing in wide tree straps, choosing robust anchor points, and being mindful of the vegetation beneath your feet, you can enjoy the unparalleled comfort of hammock camping while acting as a silent, respectful steward of the forest.
