Hammock Camping in the Rain: Expert Tips for Pitching a Tarp
There is nothing quite like the soothing sound of raindrops gently tapping against your shelter while you are warmly cocooned in the woods. However, if your shelter is improperly set up, that peaceful lullaby can quickly turn into a freezing, stressful nightmare. For ground campers, a leaky tent often means a damp sleeping pad. But for hammock campers, a failed tarp pitch means waking up suspended in a freezing puddle of water with a soaked underquilt. Because a hammock exposes you to the elements from all angles, mastering the art of the tarp pitch is the most critical survival skill you can learn. When rigged correctly, a hammock tarp offers infinitely better weather protection and ventilation than a ground tent, allowing you to ride out severe thunderstorms in complete dry comfort.
The foundation of a weatherproof hammock setup begins long before the first drop of rain falls; it starts with choosing the right style of tarp. If you are expecting heavy rain and wind, a minimalist asymmetrical or diamond-shaped tarp will simply not cut it. These ultralight tarps offer only absolute bare-minimum coverage and leave your head and feet incredibly vulnerable to wind-blown precipitation. Instead, you need a hex tarp or, ideally, a rectangular winter tarp with doors. A hex tarp provides excellent side coverage and a long ridgeline that extends well past the ends of your hammock. A winter tarp takes this a step further by featuring extra fabric at the ends that can be folded inward and staked down, creating a set of enclosed doors. This essentially transforms your hammock setup into a suspended, floating tent that completely blocks driving rain and cold wind from every possible direction.
Once you have the proper tarp, you must decide how to hang it. The industry gold standard for pitching a hammock tarp is utilizing a continuous ridgeline. A continuous ridgeline is a single, long piece of high-strength cord, typically made of Zing-It or Lash-It, that runs completely between your two anchor trees. The tarp itself is then attached to this cord using friction knots like Prusiks or specialized hardware like titanium carabiners. The massive advantage of a continuous ridgeline is adjustability. When the rain starts pouring, you do not want to be running back and forth between trees untying and retying knots to center your tarp over your hammock. With a continuous ridgeline, you simply slide the entire tarp along the cord until it perfectly covers your sleeping area, and then pull the friction knots tight to lock it in place. It takes seconds and guarantees perfect positioning.
When the sky darkens and heavy rain is imminent, the height and angle of your pitch become your primary defense mechanisms. On a sunny day, many campers pitch their tarps high above their hammocks in porch mode, using trekking poles to prop up one side like a canopy. In a severe storm, porch mode is an invitation for disaster. You must pitch your tarp in a steep A-frame configuration, and you must bring it down as low to the hammock as physically possible without the fabrics touching. By lowering the tarp, you minimize the amount of empty space between the edge of the tarp and your hammock, effectively blocking sideways, wind-driven rain. A steep pitch also ensures that heavy rainwater sheds rapidly off the sides of the nylon, preventing it from pooling in the center and causing the fabric to collapse under the sheer weight of the water.
Even if your tarp is pitched flawlessly, there is a hidden, insidious way that water will try to soak you. It is called water tracking. When it rains, water flows down the bark of the tree, onto your suspension straps, and travels straight down the lines directly onto your hammock. If you do not stop this flow, the water will saturate the gathered ends of your hammock and soak your sleeping bag through capillary action. To prevent this, you must install a water break, commonly known as a drip line. A drip line is incredibly simple. It is just a small piece of cotton string, a shoelace, or a spare carabiner tied tightly around your hammock suspension straps a few inches under the edge of the tarp. When the rainwater travels down the strap, it hits this knot, gravity takes over, and the water drips harmlessly down to the ground before it can reach your hammock.
Wind is the ultimate companion to rain, and it is the enemy of a taut tarp pitch. Nylon and polyester fabrics stretch when they get wet. If you pitch your tarp tightly before a storm, you will often find it flapping loosely in the wind an hour after the rain starts. Furthermore, heavy gusts can easily rip your stakes right out of the muddy ground. The solution to both of these problems is integrating shock cord tensioners into your guyout lines. By tying a small loop of elastic shock cord to the tie-out points of your tarp and attaching your rigid guy lines to that loop, you create a dynamic suspension system. The elastic cord will automatically contract to absorb the slack as the tarp fabric gets wet and stretches, keeping the pitch perfectly tight. During a heavy gust of wind, the shock cord acts as a shock absorber, stretching to take the brunt of the force rather than transferring that sheer stress to the ground stakes or tearing the tarp fabric.
Finally, site selection plays a massive role in staying dry. While you are suspended above the ground, the ground still matters. Never pitch your hammock directly at the bottom of a steep hill or in a natural bowl. During a torrential downpour, the ground will quickly saturate, and you will step out of your dry hammock directly into an ankle-deep puddle of mud. Look for a site with natural drainage and a slightly elevated canopy. Most importantly, always look up. Heavy rain and wind drastically increase the chance of dead branches, known as widowmakers, snapping and falling. No tarp in the world will protect you from a falling tree limb. Take the time to secure a safe, well-drained area, deploy your continuous ridgeline, batten down the hatches with a steep A-frame pitch, and secure your drip lines. With these expert techniques, you can transform a miserable, stormy night into a deeply relaxing and perfectly dry outdoor experience.
