How to Properly Adjust Your Underquilt to Eliminate Cold Drafts
You have done the research, saved your money, and finally invested in a high-quality down underquilt. You head out for your first cold-weather hammock camping trip, confident that you will be enveloped in a cocoon of warmth. Yet, at three in the morning, you wake up shivering. An invisible stream of freezing air is creeping across your lower back and shoulders, completely destroying your sleep. Before you blame the manufacturer or assume the temperature rating on the quilt was a lie, take a step back. The vast majority of cold nights in a hammock are not caused by defective gear, but rather by user error during the setup process. An underquilt is only as warm as its adjustment allows it to be. Mastering the fine art of dialing in your suspension to eliminate cold drafts is the absolute most critical skill for four-season hammock campers.
To understand how to adjust your underquilt, you first need to understand the delicate physics of hammock insulation. The goal of an underquilt is to trap a thick layer of dead air space directly against the bottom of your hammock. To do this, the quilt must achieve the Goldilocks fit. If the primary suspension is too loose, gravity will pull the underquilt away from the hammock fabric. This creates a gap, essentially a wind tunnel, where freezing ambient air can rush in and steal your body heat. Conversely, if you pull the suspension lines as tight as possible in a desperate attempt to seal the gap, you will pull the heavy hammock fabric forcefully down into the down feathers. This compresses the delicate insulation, destroys the loft, and leaves you with nothing but a thin sheet of cold nylon pressing against your back. You must find the precise balance where the quilt gently kisses the bottom of the hammock without being squashed.
The adjustment process begins with the primary suspension. Most modern underquilts utilize a primary suspension system made of thick shock cord that runs the entire length of the quilt and clips into your hammock’s carabiners or continuous loops. Start by hanging your empty hammock. Next, clip the underquilt on and stand back. Look at the profile of the setup. The underquilt should lift the empty hammock fabric up just a few inches. If the hammock is sagging heavily into the quilt, it is too tight. If the quilt is hanging limply below the hammock with visible air gaps, it is too loose. Adjust the cord locks on the primary suspension until the underquilt acts like a gentle cradle, supporting the weight of the empty hammock fabric just barely enough to take the slack out of it.
Once the primary suspension is set, you need to address the most notorious entry point for cold drafts: the ends. When you climb into your hammock and lay on a diagonal, your body geometry warps the shape of the fabric. This movement can easily pry open the ends of the underquilt, creating a bellows effect that pumps cold air over your feet and neck every time you shift your weight. To combat this, underquilts are equipped with draft collars and secondary cinch cords located at the very head and foot ends. Once you are in the hammock, or by having a friend simulate your weight, reach down and tighten these end cords. You want to cinch the ends just enough so that the fabric puckers and wraps snugly around the gathered ends of your hammock, sealing off the wind tunnel. Be careful not to over-tighten, as cinching the ends too aggressively can actually pull the center of the quilt downward, creating a new gap right beneath your lower back.
The next major hurdle in eliminating drafts is accounting for the diagonal lay. As an experienced hammock camper, you know that sleeping diagonally is the only way to achieve a flat, comfortable lay. However, underquilts are naturally rectangular. When you lay asymmetrically, pushing your feet out to the left and your head to the right, you risk pushing your body completely off the insulated footprint of the quilt, exposing your shoulders or heels to the cold air. To fix this, you must physically shift the underquilt along its suspension lines to match your sleeping angle. Many premium underquilts feature a secondary suspension system, which consists of smaller shock cords that allow you to slide the quilt up toward your head or down toward your feet. Adjust these secondary lines so that the bulk of the insulation sits directly under your torso, perfectly mirroring your asymmetrical sleeping posture.
If you are still struggling to keep the underquilt positioned over your shoulders during the night, consider using a cheap and highly effective aftermarket upgrade known as a triangle thingy or quilt hooks. These are small pieces of hardware or fabric that attach the side edges of the underquilt directly to your hammock’s structural ridgeline or the edge of the hammock fabric itself. By lifting the sides of the quilt higher up around your shoulders and feet, these accessories prevent the quilt from slipping off your body when you toss and turn, acting as a secondary line of defense against side-sweeping drafts.
The ultimate way to guarantee you have eliminated all cold drafts is to perform the hand test before you ever leave for a camping trip. Set up your complete sleep system in your backyard on a breezy afternoon. Climb into the hammock, settle into your natural diagonal sleeping position, and have a friend slowly run their bare hand between the bottom of the hammock and the inside of the underquilt. They should feel consistent, gentle contact between the two fabrics across your entire body. If their hand encounters empty space or a pocket of moving air, you have found a draft gap that needs to be tweaked. If you are alone, you can perform a modified version of this test by reaching over the side of the hammock and feeling underneath your own lower back and legs. Taking the time to meticulously adjust, test, and fine-tune your underquilt suspension in a controlled environment will transform your winter camping experience, turning freezing, miserable nights into the warmest and most comfortable outdoor sleep you have ever known.
